September: A Three Year Old, Parasites, and the Pony Express

The first weekend of September I was still super sick, so my parents came down to help out and ended up taking me home with them for a couple of days. Rusty's parents came into town so he took them and the kids to the Bear Lake cabin while I stayed at my parents'. I did a stool test, and when they called they said I had something that made me have diarrhea and I was like, "Oh wow. I didn't know that." Later, a guy called from the Department of Disease Control to ask me some questions about my recent diagnosis of "Cryptosporidium." I said, "What?!" And he told me that someone was supposed to tell me but that I had had parasites when I was so sick. They were all gone after this many weeks, but anyways that was an alarming phone call. I felt so gross!

Kirk fixed our fireplace that nobody else could fix!

This is me taking my stool sample into the hospital haha

We went shopping for Halloween decorations afterward to make me feel better

I used this hot pad thing from Emilie a lot while I was so sick!

Then Kirk and Phyllis went home and Rusty came to pick me up to take me home. We had a birthday dinner to celebrate Aaron's birthday and Amelia's birthday! Amelia chose bacon.

We finally did our back to school things! We did our ABC and 1, 2, 3 pancake breakfast after we got home from Glacier, but I didn't know where the shirts were to do the first day of school pictures. Look at my beautiful babies!

We took the boat out one final time- and this time we took my parents for my dad's birthday! It was a little chilly for my taste, but it was worth it and I knew I'd miss wake surfing. My dad couldn't do anything because of his blood thinners, so the only time he got on the tube was when we were anchored and they just paddled around on the tube.

Papa paddling them back from going to look at the geese

Our first "homeschool" thing we got to do was go out to Strawberry Reservoir and see the Salmon Run. It was so cool to have the time and ability to go do something like that. And the kids LOVED it and learned so much! I learned a lot! How cool that this is right here for us.

After the salmon run place we just pulled over and went to some BLM land to do our school work. It was so lovely to be outside and enjoying the weather and still getting our stuff done.

Why are Amelia's legs like that haha

Amelia loved this rock

Amelia's birthday was this month! I can't believe I have a three year old! My sweet little baby is growing up so quickly and it is breaking my heart. I decorated the house when she was asleep so that when she woke up it would be a fun surprise for her. We had breakfast and then she opened her presents!

I LOVE HER SO MUCH

That FACE. I mean SERIOUSLY

Posing in her new rainbow dress

She did not like the bow in her hair- she wanted it as a necklace.

I tried to con Amelia into taking a nap so she wouldn't be grumpy for her party, but she didn't want to. So I just sat in the chair in her room reading her books and taking videos and pictures of her.

For her party she wanted to go to Classic Skating! She loved riding her scooter all around and then doing some of the bouncy house things and the arcade. Then we went to a park and had cake and presents! It was such a great party, and we were surrounded by so many people that love her!

We started our unit on Native Americans, Wild West, and Geology. It is a lot of different things, but they fit so well together that I was really excited about combining them. It took a lot of planning because I didn't follow a curriculum, I just did it myself, but it turned out to be such a great unit study! I hope we can do more of these in the future!

Using some Native American symbols to write messages

Pumice floats!

We invited Chandler and Jess over and asked them to teach us about their tribes. Jess is from the Navajo tribe and Chandler is from the Lumbee tribe. Jess shows us some silver and turquoise jewelry her uncle makes, she spake in Navajo for us, and she made us some Navajo flat bread that was delicious! Chandler told us about some of their art and its symbolism. He was very happy that one of our books talked about his tribe and the pinecone art!

Flatbread for breakfast the next morning!

I wanted to take the kids to This is the Place as part of our study, and also just because I've heard it is so cool. And it was soo cool! It fit in just perfectly with our study of the Wild West and the Gold Rush. They saw some homes, panned for gold, and even went to the bank to get it weighed out. They did leather stamping, made bracelets, and went into a teepee where they watched a video about different Native American tribes. It was a great day!

Another stop we made for our unit study was the Natural History Museum of Utah. They had a lot of information about the Native American tribes in this area. We took some pictures of the jewelry and sent it to Jess! The museum also had a large exhibit on gemstones, which was so exciting for the kids to see!

Under a blacklight! Who knew!?

We learned about the Pony Express and then met up with another homeschool family to recreate it on our bikes. The messages they delivered were actually their own summaries about what they had learned, then they used candle wax to seal it, and they delivered them around. At the end we had sarsaparilla and some hard candies.

The day that we went to This is the Place we also went to the Zoo, it's just right across the street so I figured we should go while we were there! It made for a longer day, but it was worth it! The kids love the zoo, and so do I. It's always so fun! My parents were at This is the Place with us and they came over to the zoo which made it more fun!

We started a forest school group and it is going well! It took a little while because most of the kids all know each other already, but the kids started to make friends. Della is having the hardest time because there's no girls her age at all. When they split into the two age groups, she is the only girl in the lower group and that is lonely for her. But she loves the wander time at the end where they all get to play together!

Amelia found this wooly bear caterpillar and was absolutely obsessed with it. She named her Karla.

Tree identifying!

First colors of Fall!

Using plants nearby to dye our handerchiefs!

Fall is coming!

This month was a month where everything went wrong and I was so annoyed that I just wanted to run away and not even move into the stupid house. These are the cabinets that showed up in my bathroom.

This is what I asked for

And this is what I picked out in his shop.

Like. WHAT. And then when I had to call him about it he said, "Well you picked Seadrift but Caramel looks practically the same so I went with Caramel." I'M SORRY WHAT. WHAT EVEN IS GOING ON I HATE ALL OF THIS SO MUCH AND I JUST WANT TO BE DONE AND LIVE IN MY HOUSE. Ew.

Also. Look at how they spaced the lights over the island. That's fun.

We went to the Cornbelly's in Springville for the first time! I really wanted to check it out, but especially I wanted to be there to check out the sunflowers! I really wanted to take pictures of the kids in the sunflower fields so I got them cute outfits, but then we got there and it was so hot and the lighting was bad and they just wanted to play so it didn't really work out haha. But it was pretty to walk through! The rest of the time playing was really fun! It was much less crowded than the Lehi location, which was awesome.

Della was really brave and wanted to try this ride- and she loved it!

Rusty surprised us all and skipped work one day and took us all to the Alpine Slide in Park City! We all did the slide, and then we took turns taking one kid on the roller coaster while the other stayed down with Amelia. It was such a fun day!

We went mountain biking on that trail we love and the sage bushes were flowered out so beautifully! What a way to welcome fall!!

We went on a fun picnic to enjoy the beautiful colors! It was so fun to try out somewhere new. We went up the highway that goes to Brighton and just pulled over when we found a good spot. We had our dinner, pumpkin old fashioned donuts and apple cider, and then went for a little drive further up the road and saw some moose! It was so cool! A bull moose, a cow and a baby. A little family!

Whistling on our bottles

Apple Cider Day! I love this day every year. We drove out and had a great time with the family, and then Rusty and I went up to walk some land in Morgan that was for sale. I really loved the land, but you're not allowed to build anything up there and the "cabin" that's there is so stinking small. I don't need something huge but it was only one bedroom, with five other one bedroom "cabins" on the lot. My kids would be too scared to be in a different cabin (and I wouldn't love them in a different one anyway) so ultimately it was a no. But man the land was awesome.

At an opera with the family!

We started with a new tutor this month. Her name is Judith and the kids love her!

Hiding from me

Henry's Highlights:

  • Henry's favorite game is Rumikub, which is even more hilarious because he is totally an old man in a tiny child's body
  • Henry told Judith in his basic Spanish "Mi dia favorita es Sabado. No trabajo. Mi papa esta aqui." And my heart melted into a million pieces.
  • At Brayden's birthday party they were having a nerf gun war. Henry asked Brayden if he was with the Americans or the Russians haha.
  • Henry got a weird bump on his right foot about where the knuckle of the big toe is. We did a blood test and Henry was so brave! Then we did an ultrasound and they thought it was a ganglion cyst. (Later we'd find out that it wasn't).
  • I was teasing Rusty about being homeschooled and I said homeschooled kids are losers and Henry yells over "YOU'RE MAKING ME A LOSER!"

Adeline's Adventures:

  • Lost her gold tooth! This was a big deal. She's been excited about losing it for a long time- at first because she was embarrassed and got teased about it, and then because it was cool. The Tooth Fairy brought her some money that was all sparkly and special.

Calling Daddy
  • Della wants a cat so bad! She talks about it all of the time.
  • She's gotten even more dramatic. If she gets hurt it is such a big ordeal. The chin quivers, the voice whines and shakes, and it's just a whole thing haha.
  • She loves to decorate the animals in her school book with eyelashes, beautiful clothes, lipstick and bows

Amelia's Updates:

  • I asked Amelia what she wanted for her birthday dinner and she said bacon. That's it.
  • Amelia's caterpillar friend named Karla
  • "Bailey runs so fast, like a cheetah!"
  • She is for some reason kind of obsessed with death and says, "Mom I love you and you will never die" all of the time.
