Things that are different in Chawston

We have been in Charleston for a week now, and even in that short amount of time we have noticed that things are very different here in the South. Here is a list :)
  • The Civil War. It's not always called that. Other names include the War Between the States, the War of States Rights, and, my personal favorite, the War of Northern Aggression.
  • The restaurants. Popular fast food places with Mexican food, like Taco Bell and Chipotle, are never busy here. Instead, places like Bojangles (that's not a joke) are really busy. They sell fried chicken and biscuits. Main points of restaurants in the area are either seafood or fried chicken. There are like a billion Cracker Barrels and it's still called Hardee's down here.
  • The pride. These people have some crazy South Carolina pride. Like, nothing I've ever seen before. I'm talking tattoos of the state on their legs kind of pride. And their flag is EVERYWHERE. This symbol is on their license plates, but even with it there people will have stickers of the palmetto and moon on their car. The symbol is used in all kinds of business signs all over the city. It really is everywhere. And if you're not from Charleston, they don't say you're from out of town or out of state, you're just "from out." That's it. You're not from Charleston which is all that matters.
  • The accent. People's accents here are great, talk about a serious drawl. This lady at the YMCA was telling us about other locations and every time she said "Charleston" she pronounced it Chawston. I have been called honey, darlin and baby by my waitresses more times than ever in my whole life. And I can't get enough of the "How ya'll doing?" and "Ya'll enjoy now."
  • The Low Country. This is here is not called the South. It is the Low Country.
  • The people. There is a guy on the way to Boeing that just sits outside of his house all day long, with his arm propped up, and will fling his hand open any time a car, a walker, a biker, or I bet even a squirrel passes by. Think about Si on Duck Dynasty, and this is him. "Drink a little tea, mow a little grass... give a little wave."
  • The smoking. Everyone and their dog smokes here. Not my most favorite part about this place, but it's alright. Everywhere has it's quirks.
  • The cars. We have decided to count "donks" like we counted VW buses in Seattle because there are so many of them. A donk is a car that is raised up on huge wheels. Like giant. So far, we have seen a lime green one and one dedicated to Michael Jordan.
  • The grass. It's weird and very fine and kind of like turf.
